Aspire to Inspire Communities was founded in 2019 with a simple but powerful vision: to empower women—particularly within the Pakistani community—to step outside their comfort zones, build confidence, and break down long-standing barriers. What began as a grassroots effort to support “aunties” in gaining independence has since grown into a thriving organisation making a meaningful difference across Rochdale and beyond.
Kalsoom Khanum the founding director established the organisation after recognising a gap in support for women who often felt isolated due to language barriers, cultural expectations, or lack of access to resources. Early initiatives focused on helping women leave their homes, engage in community activities, and develop essential life skills. Over time, that mission evolved into something far greater.
Another key figure in the organisation, Aqub Nazir, now a director, brought a background in accounting and extensive experience in international charity work. When the COVID-19 pandemic brought global activity to a halt, attention shifted to local needs. Witnessing the growing demand for support within the community, particularly through a local food project, highlighted the urgent need for grassroots intervention. This marked the beginning of deeper involvement with Aspire to Inspire Communities.
The organisation’s name itself carries a heartfelt origin. While working in a community centre delivering ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes, the founder encountered an elderly woman who had recently lost her husband. Unable to speak English or manage basic tasks independently, she found herself completely lost. That moment became a turning point, inspiring Kalsoom to create something that would support women in similar situations. Around the same time, a phrase repeatedly heard at a local meeting—“aspire 2 inspire”—resonated deeply. After considering many options, the name Aspire 2 Inspire Communities was chosen, believed to be a sign that the mission was meant to be.
In its early days, the organisation focused on simple but impactful activities: ESOL classes, help with form-filling, and encouraging women to participate in everyday experiences like walks or arts and crafts. However, when the pandemic hit, the needs of the community changed dramatically. Families began reaching out for help with food, prescriptions, and basic necessities.
With limited resources but strong determination, Kalsoom and a small group of volunteers began purchasing and delivering food parcels using their own funds. What started as a small effort quickly grew into a large-scale operation, with dozens of food packs being delivered daily. Support from the wider community soon followed, with donations and volunteers enabling the organisation to expand its reach and secure its first premises.
Today, Aspire 2 Inspire Communities delivers a wide range of services, addressing both immediate needs and long-term empowerment. The organisation works closely with refugees, asylum seekers, and disadvantaged families, offering support with food, clothing, housing essentials, and integration into society. From providing school uniforms and furniture to installing carpets and appliances, the team often goes beyond traditional service boundaries to meet urgent needs.
One particularly moving example involved a large family living in overcrowded conditions without proper beds. After learning that the children were sleeping on the floor and struggling as a result, the organisation partnered with a local supplier to provide custom-made mattresses, significantly improving their quality of life.
Beyond crisis support, Aspire 2 Inspire Communities focuses heavily on education and personal development. Tutoring sessions help children and adults adapt to life in the UK, while workshops guide individuals through benefits systems, job readiness, and everyday challenges. Many of those once supported by the organisation have gone on to give back—running businesses, leading community initiatives, and supporting others in similar situations.
Mental health has also become a central focus. The organisation recognises the deep connection between poverty, isolation, and emotional wellbeing. While not a counselling service, the team provides a safe space for individuals to talk, often supporting people during their most vulnerable moments. Late-night calls from individuals in distress are not uncommon, and the team remains committed to being there when it matters most.
Collaboration is another key pillar of their work. By partnering with local councils, charities, and community groups, Aspire to Inspire Communities helps bridge gaps in statutory services, ensuring individuals receive the support they need without unnecessary barriers.
One of the organisation’s standout achievements is its involvement in the Duke of Edinburgh Award programme under the acess with out limits scheme. As one of the first community organisations in the area to deliver the scheme, Aspire 2 Inspire has opened doors for young people who may not have otherwise had access to such opportunities. Participants engage in volunteering, physical challenges, and skill-building activities, culminating in outdoor expeditions.
For many, these experiences are life-changing. Young people who had never left their local area have gone on to explore new environments, build resilience, and develop confidence. Some have progressed through the programme’s levels, with aspirations of reaching the prestigious Gold Award and even visiting Buckingham Palace.
The impact of Aspire 2 Inspire Communities has not gone unnoticed. The organisation has received national recognition, including the King’s Award for Voluntary Service. This honour reflects the dedication of its volunteers and the transformative work being carried out across the community. While the recognition is significant, the team places equal value on celebrating their volunteers—many of whom have been involved since the very beginning.
Through coffee mornings and outreach initiatives, Aspire 2 Inspire also encourages other organisations to grow and apply for similar opportunities, fostering a culture of collaboration and shared success.
At its core, Aspire 2 Inspire Communities is built on lived experience, compassion, and a deep understanding of the challenges faced by the people it serves. From empowering women and supporting families to nurturing young leaders and addressing mental health, the organisation continues to evolve while staying true to its original mission.
In a town rich with diversity and resilience, Aspire 2 Inspire Communities stands as a powerful example of what can be achieved when passion meets purpose—and when communities come together to uplift one another.
