Empowering Youth and Strengthening Community – Mohammed Jamal

In our latest podcast episode, we sit down with Mohammed Jamal, the inspiring founder of The Young Khadims, to explore how a simple idea born at the age of 17 has grown into a powerful force for positive change in Rochdale’s Muslim community.

Jamal shares how the journey began when he recognised a gap—there was very little available to engage and support Muslim youth locally. Determined to make a difference, he and a group of friends came together to create The Young Khadims, an initiative focused on giving young people a sense of belonging, purpose, and community.

Like many grassroots movements, the early days were not without challenges. Jamal speaks candidly about the initial resistance he faced, particularly when trying to gain support and trust from local mosques. However, through persistence, open dialogue, and a clear vision, he gradually built strong relationships and earned the confidence of community leaders.

Today, The Young Khadims play an active and vital role in the community. From organising seminars and events within mosques to inviting English-speaking scholars who can better connect with younger audiences, the group has made religious spaces more accessible and inclusive for the next generation.

Their work extends far beyond events. The Young Khadims also provide essential support during large funeral gatherings, helping to manage traffic and ensure that everything runs smoothly during sensitive and important times for families.

Collaboration is another key part of their success. Jamal highlights partnerships with organisations such as the Salik Project, which supports individuals recovering from addiction and their families. By working together with other community groups, The Young Khadims are helping to tackle a wider range of social issues and provide meaningful support where it’s needed most.

Throughout the podcast, Jamal discusses the many initiatives and projects the group is currently involved in, offering insight into their vision for the future and the continued growth of their work.

Mohammed Umar Farooq Qadri

21/03/2007 to 04/05/2025

Umar was a valued and cherished member of The Young Khadims. He was known for his hard work ethic, putting a smile on peoples faces and his passion to recite nasheeds in praise of the prophet Muhammad ﷺ

He sadly passed away at the tender age of 18, leaving a lasting memory for those who knew him. Anyone who knew him would vouch for his character. In his memory many initiatives were organised such as charitable projects abroad for the needy, weekend retreats, nasheed videos in tribute and events dedicated in his memory
